Why Facebook and Twitter and Not Geocities or Genebase?

Geocities or GenebaseAs you may agree, Facebook is a top social networking site today while Twitter usage is increasing daily. These are websites that are interesting and fun. Both are highly successful and fill a need for many people on line.

My advice to Twitter is don’t tweak the tweet and Facebook should not make too many changes. They should reap the benefits of their good fortune of developing something that people care about. Why did these enterprises rise up to take the lead in social networking? MySpace is still a magnet today, but it may have lost some marketshare.

What really happened to the site Geocities? It was interesting and creative in the early days. The software was easy to work with and many people had websites there. I know, I did. The website addresses could have been shortened to make it easier to use. I think the company bottom line was not doing well. Maybe more advertising would have made it more viable. I’m sure there were other reasons why it was eventually shut down.

About five years ago, there was a wonderful site in Canada called Genebase. It was booming in those days. It was a great social network site that had a huge following. I was addicted to that place. I had tons of friends online. Everyone shared photos, there were lots of groups established with many different interests. Everyone I talked to loved it there. Read the rest of this entry »
